Greyhound and Lurcher Welfare and Rescue was set up following the closure of the Glastonbury racetrack. We were concerned that greyhounds, seen by trainers as no longer "useful", might be put to sleep, and we wanted to offer a real alternative for these elegant sighthounds.

We also see so many lurchers (sighthound crossbreeds) used and abused for hunting, ill treated and abandoned that we decided to include these dogs in our remit too.

In the beginning, we concentrated on the Wiltshire, Somerset and Dorset areas, as this tended to be the catchment area for Glastonbury. We have now expanded to include the areas around Bristol, Poole, Bournemouth, Southampton, and re-home dogs throughout the South West..

All our dogs are neutered, vaccinated and have been given a full dental check. We also supply one month's free pet insurance on the adoption of one of our dogs. They are housed in boarding kennels, where a full assessment of the dog can be carried out and we can decide what type of home would best suit that dog.

We are a team of unpaid volunteers. Most of us have jobs and families to care for, along with our own dogs and other animals. We are dependent on volunteer help to carry our rescue work, home checks, fundraising and publicity work, and all of our expenses must be met by donations.

We believe that every unwanted dog deserves a second chance in life. Most of our greyhounds and lurchers have always been "working athletes" and have never lived in a house or had a chance to form close bonds with a human family. Some of them have been well cared for, others have been neglected or abused in their past lives. All of them are desperate for a fresh start in their own home.
